About Walking Together in the MUD

Who is ‘Walking Together in the MUD’?

We are local volunteers, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people, walking together to a better future in the Milton Ulladulla District (MUD) of the Shoalhaven, NSW, Australia.

We amplify local First Nations voices.  We listen to our Elders about what they would like to see and try to help those visions come to life. We connect with and listen to our whole Aboriginal community.

We support local First Nations’ ways of knowing, being and doing. We recognise that the oldest continuing cultures on Earth hold the solutions to healing Country and our communities.

We hold celebrations and opportunities to share in the richness of Aboriginal cultural knowledge and lore. We share knowledge of how Country was changed when the ships sailed in and the boats arrived. Our focus is to inform and teach: show community Indigenous cultures, share Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing to create a better understanding of Indigenous peoples and how to care for Country in a sustainable way.

The Uluru Statement from the Heart

Our group first formed around the 2023 Voice Referendum and we committed to a lifelong walk in support of First Nations voices. We support the Uluru Statement from the Heart (2017) and its call for ‘Voice, Treaty, Truth’.

The Uluru Statement ends with: “We invite you to walk with us in a movement of the Australian people for a better future.”

Walk with us towards a better future

‘Yellow fin, blue fin and black fish, are all fish.
Yellow box, blue box and black wattle are all trees.
The point I’m trying to make is:
it doesn't matter your color  if we are all
‘Walking Together’ on the same path.’
- Mitchell Lasker, proud Aboriginal man and founding member of Walking Together.

Our foundation members are Mitchell Lasker, Sharon Bunyan, and Georgie Lowe (non-Indigenous).

Walking Together in the Milton Ulladulla District is a sub-committee of the Shoalhaven Walking Together Alliance, an incorporated not-for-profit association under the Associations Incorporation Act 2009 (NSW).  Our Aims:

  1. To work towards achieving justice for all First Nations People in Australia by supporting the implementation of the Uluru Statement from the Heart and its call for Voice, Treaty and Truth, and the provisions of the 2007 United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

  2. To support the initiatives that are led by local Aboriginal communities of the Shoalhaven and Jervis Bay Territory.

  3. To promote a culture of anti-racism among the non-Aboriginal membership of the Association, and in the broader Shoalhaven community, by understanding and acknowledging racism, white privilege and white fragility in ourselves and in Australian society; and to promote an environment where racism is actively challenged and addressed.

  4. To make our local communities in the Shoalhaven and Jervis Bay Territory more safe, loving and inclusive for First Nations Peoples.

  5. To work towards an historical understanding and acceptance by non-Aboriginal people of the ongoing impact of colonisation on First Nations Peoples in the Shoalhaven and Jervis Bay Territory through First Nations led local truth-telling and education.
